Barry began drawing and painting at age four, encouraged by his cousin Thomas Marshall whose own cartoon work inspired Barry. At age 13 he won a statewide (Georgia) art competition, and again achieved this at age fourteen. He was extended a full art scholarship to the University of Georgia by Lamar Dodd, but turned it down to attend Georgia State for one year to study under Joe Perrin. Barry would leave his art education to pursue entertainment, little realizing that he would return to his first love later in life and incorporate it into his creative endeavors in a very serious way.
Faces & Songs
It is the story-songs that inspired the series of artwork – Faces & Songs. Through his charcoal and pencil renderings, Mr. Etris has captured the vividness and sensitivity of his characters, giving the public the opportunity to experience the qualities that so inspired the songs.
